Targeted instruction for struggling readers

Phonics intervention that starts with the skill, not the grade level

When a reader struggles with unfamiliar words, more reading time alone may not address the missing decoding pattern. PhonicsPro organizes teacher-directed practice around explicit phonics and spelling skills, so instruction can focus on what the student needs next.

How it supports instruction

Identify the pattern to teach

Use available rule and subskill performance information alongside classroom observations and a teacher-reviewed work sample. Look for a specific difficulty, such as vowel-consonant-e, consonant digraphs, syllable division, or suffix spelling. The instructional checks are not standardized diagnostic tests.

Teach, model, and guide

Explain the target spelling or syllable pattern, demonstrate it in a few words, and let students work with rule-aware letter tiles. Guided practice helps make the pattern visible before students are asked to spell or read independently.

Check application beyond one word

Practice moves through Analyze, Build It, Spell It, Transfer, and Dictate. Word-level success and sentence-level application are treated as separate evidence. Teachers should confirm performance with unfamiliar words and later review.

Plan the next intervention

Teacher-reviewed error patterns can suggest a reteaching sequence and a follow-up check. Suggestions support professional judgment; they do not automatically establish that an intervention caused improvement.

Skills and evidence to explore

  • Short-vowel and consonant patterns
  • Silent-e and vowel-team decoding
  • Syllable division and multisyllabic words
  • Prefixes, suffixes, and base words

Suitable for exploring a teacher-directed intervention workflow. Phoneme-specific listening activities remain limited until expert-reviewed isolated-sound recordings are approved.
